We are looking for a Chief Examiner to join us in overseeing the production and maintenance of assessments with the first assessment from September 2026 and beyond. This is a senior role within our Wood Occupations associate examining team.
The Chief Examiner is a key part of the delivery of technical qualifications and is involved in every aspect of the assessment production, standard setting and maintenance. The role will include taking a lead role in the quality assurance of assessment production for the externally assessed examination series and internally assessed assignments. Working alongside other subject matter experts, writing and editing assessment content, and leading a team through the annual cycle of production, standard setting and confirmatory awarding.

All activity must take place within the UK with the potential to travel to London for meetings when required, although it is anticipated that most of the assessment production activity will take place remotely.
This role will oversee City & Guilds brand new Technical Occupational Entry (OTQ) in Wood Occupations (Site Carpentry). These qualifications are designed for 16-19 and 19+ learners. This qualification is for those individuals who wish to gain the knowledge and skills required to commence a career within the Carpentry sector.
Covering Level 3 topics such as:
• Introduction to Complex Carpentry & Joinery
• First Fix
• Second Fix
• Roofing
• Maintenance and Repairs
You will oversee the production and maintenance of the following assessments:
• X2 On-demand, online MCQ theory exams, and,
• X1 on-demand practical assignment
The examination is an externally set multiple-choice exam, which is marked by City & Guilds (externally). The assignments are externally set, internally marked and externally verified. This role does not have any responsibilities towards verification, however, the Chief Examiner may be required to work closely with our EQAS to understand performance and feedback from centres.
Production of assessment materials:
The Chief Examiner oversees and quality assures a group of associates who are responsible for the production of the assessment. The Chief Examiner is responsible for ensuring we are setting appropriate and valid assessments which are consistent across the pathways.
The Chief Examiner will be required to review assessments throughout the production process, key milestones of the production process will be shared at the point the content is commissioned, but this may have a variety of timescales attached.
The Chief Examiner will be required to attend the Assessment Material Evaluation Committees (AMECs) for each version produced, which are full day remote meetings. This activity will occur throughout the year. We aim to produce 3-4 versions of each assessment annually.
Maintenance of assessments:
The Chief Examiner is responsible for setting and maintaining standards across the qualification. The Chief Examiner leads their team during standard setting activities, such as modified Angoff, and to confirm grade boundaries. As these assessments are available on-demand, all year around, the Chief Examiner is responsible for ensuring our assessments remain fit-for-purpose over time. This includes informing City & Guilds of any industry changes which may impact the assessments, as well as analysing and reviewing the performance of the tests.
This activity will take place throughout the year. Throughout the year, the Chief Examiner will also be on hand to support City & Guilds in responding to queries and feedback in relation to the assessments.
