Chief Examiner – Engineering OTQs – Remote

Would you like to be involved with supporting the production, delivery and maintenance of City & Guilds new reform qualifications in Engineering and Manufacturing?

We are looking for a Chief Examiner to join us in overseeing the production and maintenance of assessments with first assessment from September 2025 and beyond.

This is a senior role within our Engineering and Manufacturing associate examining team.

As the Chief Examiner for the Technical Occupational Entry (OTQ) in Engineering and Manufacturing you will oversee the following assessments:

– X1 Level 2 Theory Exam which will be available twice a year in Spring and Summer
– X3 Level 2 Pathway Practical Assignments in manufacturing, maintenance and fabrication and welding.

The role will require input from you throughout the year as we produce and maintain the assessments.

All activity must take place within the UK with the potential to travel to London for meetings when required, although it is anticipated that most of the assessment production activity will take place remotely.

This role will oversee City & Guilds brand new Technical Occupational Entry (OTQ) in Engineering and Manufacturing. These qualifications are designed for adults with a purpose of achieving entry level competence into industry.

The qualification consists of a dated, short answer theory exam and on-demand assignments which assess the knowledge and skills from across the qualification.

The qualification has three pathways within it: manufacturing, maintenance and fabrication and welding.

Learners will be required to take an examination, which is common to all pathways and undertake an assignment which is specialised to their pathway.

The examination is an externally set multiple-choice exam, which is marked by City & Guilds (externally). The assignments are externally set, internally marked and externally verified.

This role does not have any responsibilities towards verification, however the Chief Examiner may be required to work closely with our EQAS to understand performance and feedback from centres.

Production of assessment materials:
The Chief Examiner oversees and quality assures a group of examiners who are responsible for the production of the assessment. They are responsible for ensuring we are setting appropriate and valid assessments which are consistent across the pathways.

They will be required to review assessments throughout the production process; key milestones of the production process will be shared at the point the content is commissioned, but this may have a variety of timescales attached.

The Chief Examiner will be required to attend the Assessment Material Evaluation Committees (AMECs) for each version produced, which are full day remote meetings. This activity will occur throughout the year. We aim to produce 3-4 versions of each assessment annually.

Delivery of assessments:
The Chief Examiner has key responsibilities in ensuring consistent approaches in the delivery of the examination series. During a series, the Chief Examiner will supervise the Principal Examiner to ensure marking teams deliver accurate and consistent results.

Responsibilities include delivery quality of marking to timescale, which requires attendance at standardisation meetings, quality assuring marking and ensuring sufficient sampling is taking place.

The Chief Examiner is responsible for setting and maintaining standards across the qualification. The Chief Examiner leads their teams during standard setting activities to award grade boundaries.

The Chief Examiner must be available throughout the marking window and have the capacity to be responsive during this period at short notice.

Throughout the year, the Chief Examiner will also be on hand to support City & Guilds in responding to queries and feedback in relation to the assessments.

A full training and induction plan will be put in place for the successful applicant.

About your application:
When completing your application, it is essential you read the person specification fully, and map your application to show where you meet the requirements set out.  Please note applications that do not demonstrate meeting the person specification may be declined or delayed.

Applications will be reviewed on an on-going basis; suitable applicants will be invited to attend an interview with our Assessment Team.

We believe that diversity and inclusion strengthen and enriches us, and that it is the responsibility of everyone at the City & Guilds Group to drive this value. We work hard to be inclusive in our approach to recruitment and associate opportunities, whilst still ensuring we meet our regulatory requirements. We strongly encourage and welcome applications from diverse and underrepresented communities.
