Why choosing an apprenticeship is by far the best opportunity I’ve had
With over 400,000 apprenticeship starts across England in 2018, it is clear to see why many young adults are now choosing an apprenticeship over university. Midlands training provider, CT Skills work with a variety of leading employers and last year alone listed an average of 30 apprenticeship vacancies at any one time in a variety of sectors.
This is how aspiring apprentice Sophie Foster, came across a Business Administration apprenticeship with Derby based, award winning engineering consultancy, Rodgers Leask.
Sophie wasn’t sure about university, but had longed for a business-related career so after finishing college she began to search for a way she could pursue her dream job whilst still achieving the qualifications required to progress.
She explains; “I researched apprenticeships and then applied for the one here at Rodgers Leask through the CT Skills website. I had decided a long time before that going into a job and gaining a qualification was the right choice for me as I wanted to earn my own money and get myself on the career ladder.”
Shortly after applying, Sophie attended an interview and secured the role as an Administrator with Rodgers Leask. The duties of the role included answering telephone calls, greeting people at reception, ensuring all stock is up to date and completing any general administrative duties across the business.
She continues;
“I have only worked here for a few months, but I am really enjoying it and my tutor Craig Bennett is very friendly and easy to talk to… if I have any questions, he is fantastic at answering them. Now I am in a business environment, I have realised I would love to pursue a career in HR – so following this I am interested in beginning the HR apprenticeship with CT Skills. This is definitely something I would never have considered if I had gone to university.”
The apprenticeship has not only helped Sophie to realise her long-term career goals, but it has also given her the confidence and determination to succeed.
Sophie concludes;
“Since beginning my apprenticeship, I feel more hard working and I am always looking at ways to complete my work to a high quality. I have gained confidence meaning I would be comfortable taking on more responsibilities already. The combination of CT Skills and Rodgers Leask is by far the best opportunity I’ve had!”
