10% increase for Apprenticeship and levy statistics: April 2019

Apprenticeships and Skills Minister Anne Milton said:

“It is great news that these figures show we are continuing to see a rise in the number of people starting their apprenticeship journey – an increase of 10% compared to the same point last year. It is also brilliant to see that over 4 million people have started an apprenticeship since May 2010.

“Apprenticeships offer people of all ages and backgrounds a high quality route to skilled employment with the option to train at every level in a range of exciting professions like teaching, law, data science and accountancy.

“We overhauled the apprenticeships system two years ago and we have made some great progress. Apprenticeships are now longer, higher-quality, with more off-the-job training and provide for a proper assessment at the end, with the Levy giving employers more control to invest in the skills they need for the future”.

Mark Dawe, CEO AELP says:

“AELP still believes that introducing the levy was right but starts being over a third down on pre-levy levels show that the Chancellor was also right to call for a fundamental review of how the funding system is working. 

“As last week’s report by the Federation of Small Businesses illustrated, it’s increasing funding available for SMEs as major providers of level 2 and 3 apprenticeships which is the biggest priority and the government must use the Spending Review to restore the funding for them that was there prior to the levy.”

Official statistics on the use of the apprenticeship service, including:

• apprenticeship service account registrations to March 2019

• number of commitments and transferred commitments, where an individual who is expected to start an apprenticeship is recorded in the system, to March 2019

• number of transferred commitments that have materialised into apprenticeship starts

Monthly apprenticeship starts information for the first 7 months of the 2018 to 2019 academic year are also presented.

We may adjust the content and timing of these statistics, depending on user feedback and data reporting.
