Overview
This is the first in a series of 3 webinars will help you to consider and develop your culture, strategy, teaching and employment practices to become more inclusive.
Inclusive practice is quite rightly a growing focus for all providers, as numbers of young people and adults with disclosed disabilities rise, and society changes to reflect a wider range of diverse needs. Our understanding of disability has evolved over time and has historically been discussed in the context of health, discrimination and human rights. Some key facts:
- There are c.13 million disabled people in UK – around 19%
- Over 1.5 million children and young people have Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) in the UK – around 18%
- 500,000 young people have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) – around 5%. Up 11% since 2023
- The number of young people with EHCPs is increasing at a faster rate than ever before; the acuity of their needs is ever greater
- The SEND Improvement and Change Programme is one of the most delayed pieces of education legislation in recent history
- Employment outcomes for young people with disabilities remains scandalously low, with a national disability employment gap of c.30%
Education providers – as always – are at the heart of much-needed social change, however too few providers are confident to discuss and explore the reality of what makes them truly inclusive.
