From education to employment

Kickstart puts Alice on the career ladder

Alice Fawcett attended Impington Village College before enrolling with Cambridge Regional College to continue her education. Alice spent 4 years studying at CRC starting on the Level 2 Creative Media course, before moving on to the Level 2 Travel & Tourism course, followed by the 2-year, Level 3 Creative Journalism course.

Finding herself unsure of what career path she wanted to pursue, Alice signed up for a Business Administration apprenticeship with a local Housing company. Upon completion of her 18-month apprenticeship, Alice had hoped to continue with the company however a reorganisation resulted in her role no longer existing and she found herself unemployed.

“Being unemployed was really stressful. I signed up for Universal Credit and started attending meetings with a job coach to find suitable employment. My job coach talked to me about the Kickstart Scheme, and we started to explore the opportunities available. Many of the roles were in the wrong sector for me, and it took 2 months before I was signed up to a Kickstart role at Cambridge Regional College. I was excited about the chance to return to CRC as I knew the Cambridge campus very well.”

Alice started in her role as Kickstart Senior Administrator on 1st November and she has quickly settled into her role within the Curriculum Administration team. The role provides 25 hours of paid employment per week, for a period of 6 months giving Alice the opportunity to gain real-life work experience while further developing her knowledge and skills.

Alice added, “I am really enjoying being part of a team. In my previous role, I worked from home a lot and I found it quite isolating. Working in a non-customer facing support role means that I can get really focus on the job. I would like to stay at CRC beyond my 6 month Kickstart, and in time, I would like to further my studies to progress in a Business Administration role.

The Kickstart Scheme has not only enabled me to get back into employment it has also increased my confidence. If you are looking for the next step in your career, explore the opportunities with the Kickstart Scheme, even if they are completely new to you. Utilise your job coach as they have the right information and contacts to get you started.”
