Childcare students go the extra mile at South West College
Recently, South West College’s Omagh campus played host to the launch of the ‘Daily Mile’ as part of the study experience for the Foundation Degree in Early Childhood Studies students.
This group of students along with their lecturers took to a route around the town of Omagh to promote the initiative. It is a UK wide campaign from The Daily Mile Foundation based in Lyndhurst, England that encourages pupils and young people to take part in a jog or walk for at least 15 minutes everyday to support being fit for life and fit for education.
Teachers, classroom assistants and tutors are all encouraged to take part in this campaign in their local area and add to the growing population in the daily mile community. Every child, no matter their age or ability is encouraged to take part.
The college students were out to promote the campaign in Omagh and support it in a childcare setting as they progress in their careers after graduating.
Roisin McGrath, Childcare Lecturer at SWC said:
“It’s a fantastic initiative to support. The local community, particular those in a primary education or childcare setting, will benefit immensely from taking part in this free, healthy activity. A great opportunity to boost social skills, confidence and fitness of both the body and mind. We are proud to give our foundation degree students the opportunity to join in the promotion and raising awareness of the daily mile”.
This foundation degree course is delivered at South West College and also gives you the opportunity to study at Stranmillis in Belfast. If you’re interested in being the next student to go the extra mile and join the Foundation Degree in Early Childhood Studies, you can find out more on www.swc.ac.uk and use the search feature to look up ‘foundation degree childcare’ for both part-time and full-time options.
