Award-winning barber drops in to help out Fife College students

Award-winning barber Liam Thomson has visited Fife College (@fifecollege) to speak to students and demonstrate how to create some of his favourite styles.

The 2020/21 Scottish Barber of the Year winner met with students on the College’s barbering course before carrying out a tutorial on how to create a skin fade with a crop, and a graduation mullet with a taper at the sides.

The students then had a go at recreating the haircuts themselves on dummy heads with Liam answering any questions they had while they were attempting it.

Liam founded Lovett’s barbers in 2013, which fuses the latest technicalities of modern hairdressing with traditional barbering practices, and now has shops in Dundee, Aberdeen and Broughty Ferry.

Liam’s visit was organised by the College to ensure that students continued to have access to the latest thinking within the industry.

Speaking after his visit, Liam Thomson said:

“It was great to be able to visit Fife College and meet some of their amazing students.

“They were all really enthusiastic to learn more about barbering, and I’m delighted I was able to show them a couple of new styles and pass on some tricks of the trade.

“They all picked up the techniques I was telling them about quite quickly, and with a bit more practice they’ll be on their way to becoming really good barbers.

“The course they’re studying at the College is clearly a great place for them to start, and I told them that if they stay passionate about what they’re doing they’ll go on to have great careers in the industry.”

Fife College barbering student Hayley Whyte, from Leven, said the tutorial has given her some vital experience that will help in her future career:

“I really enjoyed learning from Liam. There was a ton of really useful information in the tutorial and I got a lot from it.

“He’s a really down to earth guy and he was able to explain everything really well.

“He’s obviously got a lot of experience in the industry so he was also able to pass on some great tips and advice, and I know everyone in the class found it really helpful.

“I’m keen to go on to work in a barbers once I’ve finished my course at the college, and to gain knowledge like this will definitely come in handy in the future.”

Barbering lecturer at Fife College, Adrian Rudge, commented:

“We’re really grateful to Liam for taking the time to come and speak with our students.

“He’s a fantastic barber and one of the most talented in the industry, so for our students to have an opportunity to learn from him is a great privilege.

“The students learnt a lot from the tutorial and are now looking forward to honing the skills that Liam passed on to them.

“We’ll continue to do all we can to ensure they receive the most relevant training possible by giving them access to the latest styles and techniques.”
