Colleges Week sports day challenges learners
The College of Haringey, Enfield and North East London hosted a sports day last week to showcase the many different routes to learning.
The event took place at the school’s Enfield campus, and was just one of the various activities colleges nationwide organised as part of Colleges Week 2010.
Part of a nationwide fundraising initiative, colleges across the country organised their own sports days to raise money for charity.
At Enfield, staff and students of the college were encouraged to try out new sports like badminton and table tennis. In addition, there was a karate exhibition and members of the school’s Football Academy got involved; holding a beat-the-goalie competition and showing off some freestyle football skills.
The local Enfield health trainers and the Enfield sports development team also set up information stands and chatted to learners about fitness and healthy eating.
The day was popular amongst both staff and learners at the college. Seventeen year old Chavez Campbell, a promising boxer who is aiming to make the British Olympic squad, agreed: “These facilities are so good, it’s brilliant to see lots of new faces today, trying out a new sport.”
Summing up the overall goals of the event Tulay Rashid, an assistant director at the college with responsibility for sport, said: “Sport can be a very powerful route to learning, so we are delighted that so many students took part, tried something new and raised money for such an important local good cause.”
