VTCT takes heed of Ofsted success

According to a new Ofsted survey, colleges achieving best practice in the hair and beauty therapy sector are specialist awarding body VTCT centres.

“We are extremely pleased to work with these centres – all of which are setting a positive and first rate example of practice within hair and beauty training by supporting students in striving for distinction,” said Nic Robinson, VTCT director of business development.

The survey investigated common features among colleges achieving good or outstanding status in inspections. The similarities include the effectiveness of teaching literacy and numeracy, which prove an integral part of the courses.

Other significant key findings publicised, emphasize the importance of a broad range of enrichment activities, the use of specialist accommodation and a focus on meeting the needs of employers.

Guidelines have been issued in response to the survey results, to ensure a continuation in best practice and to rectify areas that require improvement such as recruitment of male students.

Colleges have been advised to strengthen their connections with local authorities, schools and employers to increase the proportion of male hairdressing and beauty therapy learners.

The study concluded with a recommendation that employers need to be conferred with regularly on their business requirements relating to education and training.

Mr Robinson added: “In response to the findings VTCT is currently putting on a series of CPD workshops around the country working with the HABIA skills team. VTCT will seek to identify and celebrate good practice through various ways in numerous ways – this includes highlighting examples of best practice in VTCT news and commending teachers demonstrating excellent practice or particular innovation in VTCT’s annual awards.
