Apprentices celebrate best of Liverpool culture

Hundreds flocked to Liverpool’s Capital of Coiffure show to preview a range of unique hairstyles, each reflecting a different aspect of the city’s illustrious cultural scene. Hosted by Atomic Kitten star Natasha Hamilton, the iconic event held on 29th October saw Merseyside’s top 35 apprentice hairdressers create a catwalk of singular looks inspired by themes like modern art, retro fashion, football and music.

Hosted by Atomic Kitten star Natasha Hamilton, the iconic event held on 29th October saw Merseyside’s top 35 apprentice hairdressers create a catwalk of singular looks inspired by themes like modern art, retro fashion, football and music.

In flamboyant recognition of the city’s European Capital of Culture status, the young stylists used quirky, convention-busting hair design to communicate their own interpretations of local culture with jaw-dropping results.

Natasha Hamilton, a Liverpool cultural icon in her own right, praised the apprentices’ skills: "These young people mesmerised the crowd with their designs, grabbing the best of Liverpool culture and working it into the most creative hairstyles ever seen. What a brilliant and original way to present our city."

Capital of Coiffure was organised by Merseyside Hairdressing Forum who provide Apprenticeships training to the show participants. Apprenticeships are funded by the Learning and Skills Council (LSC).

Sue Price, LSC Partnership Director for Liverpool, attended the show at Liverpool’s Metquarter and was impressed by what she saw: "This event leaves us in no doubt that the skills, professionalism and enthusiasm of Merseyside’s apprentices spell a world-class future for our hairdressing industry. These young people are fantastic examples of how Apprenticeships can provide the stepping stone to an exciting and fulfilling career."

Capital of Coiffure featured four stunning catwalk showcases with additional entertainment provided by MD Productions, the young dance sensations of Britain’s Got Talent fame.

Brian Quinn, chair of the Merseyside Hairdressing Forum and co-host of Capital of Coiffure, notes how the event has contributed to Liverpool’s growing reputation as a city where professional skills meet raw creativity with astounding results: "Liverpool’s Capital of Culture status has seen everyone wake up to the abundant innovative flair that exists in our city. This pool of talent includes our apprentice hairdressers who are helping Liverpool take a leading role at the cutting edge of creative hair design."
