New for 2021: The College Merthyr Tydfil introduces Hybrid Electric Vehicle training within all Motor Vehicle courses

Recognising the increase of Hybrid Electric vehicles on the road today and the predicted future increase within the motor industry, investment has been made into renewable energy and sustainable technologies to ensure that the motor vehicle curriculum is able to meet the demands from industry.

The new curriculum, which will help ensure that future motor vehicle technicians have the correct skills to repair hybrid electric vehicles, will support the predicted rise in demand for these vehicles in line with the Government ban on new petrol and diesel cars by 2030. 

With a high demand for current motor vehicle courses and a predicted growing trend for mechanics within our local area over the next 10 years, the hybrid/electric technology will be built into the college’s existing Institute of the Motor Industry qualification, offering the opportunity for up to 20 learners to gain these new and emerging skills each year. 

Commenting on the development, Neil Clancy, Head of Advanced Manufacturing at the college, stated:

“It is an exciting time for the Motor Vehicle Industry and the College has been working towards the development of this new provision over the last year. We now have a dedicated workshop, enabling us to support the delivery of the teaching and skills required for the maintenance of hybrid electric vehicles and train the mechanics of the future.”
