The numbers work for Lewis

Lewis McCormack, 17, from Romford, is profoundly deaf but this has never been something to stop him accomplish his goals. 

At just 14, he decided he wanted to work in accounting as he loved maths.  After completing his GCSEs it was a natural choice for him to join Barking & Dagenham College to study accountancy.  This is because his father, who is also deaf, attended the College for three years to complete his plastering course in 2012! 

The College has a team of communicators for the deaf who support a number of students, providing a one-to-one service to allow them to continue their studies in any field they choose.  Since September Lewis has been supported with British Sign Language (BSL) by Denise Hajduga, one of the team’s educational communicators.

Despite having to switch to studying remotely because of the pandemic, Lewis has worked extremely hard and this week found out he had passed his first accountancy exam with the joint top mark of over 96%!

Denise said: “Lewis is a valued student within his class. Despite the changes in the normal College environment Lewis has excelled. Remote learning has been difficult for him at times but he has coped exceedingly well. Lewis is kind, friendly, enthusiastic and keen to learn and progress with his education.  He wants to make his family proud of his success.”  And this is certainly something he is doing!

Having achieved such a great result, Lewis now plans to stay on at the College to study accountancy further.
