New UUK International report: Future international partnerships

#WeAreInternational – A new paper, published today (20 Oct) by Universities UK International, outlines how the UK can be at the heart of global collaboration in research and innovation and grow its reputation as a global leader after the end of the Brexit transition period.

Future international partnerships: putting the UK at the heart of global research and innovation collaboration builds on the UK government’s research and development roadmap, published in July, and outlines specific proposals to deliver the vision set out by government to strengthen the UK’s global position in research.

The paper highlights that universities will be instrumental in making the government’s vision a reality, through their international networks of excellent partners, their critical contribution to building innovation capacity in their local economy, and their institutional partnerships with universities across the world.

Key recommendations for government, funding bodies and institutions include:

  • Suggested principles for a successful prestige talent scheme to attract researchers from across the world
  • A new strategic framework of funding agreements with advanced research economies to enhance researchers’ abilities to collaborate with a greater array of excellent partners over time
  • Mainstreaming funding for cross-border projects to enable researchers to collaborate with partners anywhere in the world at speed
  • A new national funding priority to attract investment from overseas businesses aimed at universities across the four nations and in parts of the UK that need it the most
  • A new entrepreneurship talent programme to retain young international entrepreneurs to start and grow their businesses in the UK
  • New ways of strengthening and seeding university partnerships with institutions across the globe to boost the mobility of researchers and students
