Art Students from Filton College put Work on Display for Community

Students at Filton College’s Bristol School of Art will enjoy a unique opportunity to showcase their talents, when they display their work on the theme of “art for the community” at PAINTWORKS between Friday the 13th and Sunday the 15th of January.

The students, who are in the second year of the AVCE Art and Design course, have spent time investigating the art already present in the local community, in order to use it as a basis from which to develop new, independent and innovative ideas. They discussed their ideas for community art projects with a number of residents and local organizations including, Bristol Parkway Railway station, the CREATE Centre, the Silai Project Ltd, The Scrapstore, Hobbs Salon, Stems Florists and Cosies wine bar.

Influences from the World Around

Amongst the works that will be on display is a mural designed especially for the education room at Bristol Rovers and samples of photography for communal areas within Bristol Parkway station. At the CREATE centre, it was environmental and recycling issues that inspired the student’s creativity, and artwork at the Silai Project, a sewing project for women, has been influenced by the wide range of ethnic backgrounds of the students using the centre. Artwork exploring local fashion and style will also be on display at Hobbs hair salon.

Sam Edwards, Fashion and Textiles Technician at Filton College, expressed his warm gratitude to the local organizations involved for their support, stating; ” This has been a huge project which would not have been possible without the enormous amount of input from local residents and organizations.”

Local Audiences

He also made special mention of the Art Officers at Bristol City Council and Doveton printers. He claimed that the “art in the community” project had succeeded remarkably in its aim to “raise the profile of our students and provide them with local audiences.” He confirmed that all the students are pleased with their achievements, and are looking forward to seeing their work on display throughout the local community following the exhibition in January.

Edwards described the PAINTWORKS exhibition as an “exciting” event, encouraging all art enthusiasts and residents of Bristol to attend, in order to witness for themselves what Bristol’s young art students have to offer.
