Jamie pursues dream career in accounting at Deloitte
Jamie Rutland, an accounting student at Burton and South Derbyshire College (BSDC) is on track to fulfil his goal of becoming a chartered accountant after successfully securing an apprenticeship role at global company, Deloitte.
Upon completing his GCSEs, Jamie was at a crossroads, unsure which direction to take. He decided that his logical problem-solving skills would be suited to a career in accounting and set his sights on working for a large organisation which specialises in financial services.
Jamie first completed the AAT Level 2 Bookkeeping course at Burton and South Derbyshire College before progressing to the AAT Level 3 Accounting. During his studies at BSDC, his tutors encouraged him to think about his next steps and whether he would progress to the Level 4 course at college or undertake the apprenticeship route.
Keen to get into the workplace, Jamie started looking for apprenticeships and was excited to see the apprenticeship job opportunity with Deloitte in their Newcastle office. Jamie received support from his tutors in preparing for the interview, helping to develop his interview skills and confidence.
On hearing the news that he had been successful in securing the role, Jamie was thrilled, commenting: “I’m so pleased to get the apprenticeship – it’s really difficult to get a job at Deloitte, so to be one of the people who got in was a massive achievement. Deloitte is the company that I’ve wanted to work for since I decided to become an accountant. It’s brilliant that the company I want to work for want me to work for them!
Jamie added: “Relocating to Newcastle feels a little scary but exciting as well, as I’ll just be in the same boat as students who have moved away to university. I definitely think that the work skills sessions and working through the College’s Skills Promise set me up for my next steps. After my Level 4, I want to go on to become a chartered accountant with the ACCA and would ideally like to work up the corporate ladder at Deloitte to partner level in the future.”
