College Works with School Students Throughout County to Offer First “Girls Only” Enginee

A Welsh College has announced that they have recently held a course open to school students from their local area that enables school girls to get a taste of what engineering entails.

The Coleg Powys scheme welcomed school girls from across the county as they benefited from the College’s first ever “girls only” taster programme. Engineering student Sara Lowe who is taking a one year vehicle fitting course talked to them on her experiences in the motor vehicle industry. The pupils also experienced various facets of the motor vehicle, electrical, welding and mechanical engineering sectors.

The College is the only FE establishment in the county, and has been around since its formation in 1989 after the amalgamation of colleges in Brecon, Llandrindod Wells and Newtown. In the academic year of 2004 ““ 2005, the College welcomed some 9,000 learners to the institution across a range of academic and vocational subjects. The College is commonly rated at the top of the FE tree in Wales in terms of its organisational, financial and quality standards.

Delight at the Interest

One of the College’s tutors was delighted at the interest the programme demonstrated. Motor vehicle engineering tutor Rod Evans said: “We are delighted see so many young ladies taking an interest in the engineering sector. There are plenty of new opportunities for young ladies within the industry. It is just a matter of identifying the areas and assisting in the promotional aspect of the taster sessions. We are very grateful to Sara for offering her view of the industry. All the young ladies thought her talk was excellent.”

A senior figure also took the opportunity to praise the scheme and to highlight the benefits. Head of engineering Kevin Morris said: “This is a “win win” situation for all concerned. We have never had so much interest in our courses and we have certainly never had girls attending our sessions. As a result of this success, plans are already underway for the next taster session.”
