Scotland’s National Chef inducted into Hall of Fame at CDN College Awards
Scotland’s National Chef and BBC Masterchef: The Professionals winner Gary Maclean was last night inducted into the CDN College Hall of Fame at CDN’s College Awards 2019, Radisson Blu, Glasgow.

“The CDN College Hall of Fame is a way of highlighting and recognising the outstanding contribution that college graduates make to society and the economy; and demonstrates the variety of pathways to success from college. Gary is an inspiration and we are delighted to extend our congratulations to him on being awarded this accolade.”
This year was the 20th CDN College Awards, which showcases the outstanding work taking place in Scotland’s colleges, shining a light on college students and staff. It was the biggest year yet, with over 200 people attending the Awards ceremony at Radisson Blu in Glasgow.
Gary was presented with his award by College Awards special guest Aileen McKechnie, Director of Advanced Learning and Science at the Scottish Government.
Gary grew up in Knightswood, Glasgow, where he enjoyed cooking from a very young age and was inspired to become a chef at school – his favourite subject was Home Economics. After leaving school he went to college, to study HND Catering and Hospitality Management at Glasgow College of Food Technology, now known as City of Glasgow College.
Gary said:
“It is both humbling and a privilege to be inducted into the College Hall of Fame. To be recognised in this way is an honour for me personally, but also for City of Glasgow College and the incredible team I am fortunate to work with and whose dedication and expertise are shaping and inspiring the next generation of chefs.”
Gary has worked alongside some of the UK’s and Scotland’s top chefs. During his distinguished career he has created over 80 restaurants and he continually creates and tests his unique recipes, using locally sourced and fresh food.
The 47-year-old is passionate about creative cooking and mentoring young chefs. He has worked at City of Glasgow College for over 17 years where he is culinary team coach, and has led his team to victory at many national and international competitions. His links with
industry and respected position means he has been able to help and support many students throughout their learning journey and directly into employment.
Since winning Masterchef The Professionals in 2016, Gary was appointed the first National Chef of Scotland by the Scottish Government in November 2017. The role is all about celebrating Scottish produce, as well as teaching people how to make the most of locally sourced, healthy, sustainable and affordable food.
