A Step in the Right Direction; VTS Don”t Sink but Swim!

In a fillip for their hard work, the VT Shipbuilding (VTS) Workplace Learning Centre has won a prestigious Big Tick Award, with the help of Eastleigh College, from Business in the Community.

Working with tutors from Eastleigh College for four days a week over the past year, VTS have delivered literacy, numeracy and ICT skills training to their employees. The Big Tick award, sponsored by Rentokil Initial, is given to companies who demonstrate a high standard of excellence in the way they organize and integrate their responsible business practices. VTS have not only done this but made a positive impact on both the business and the society within which they work.

Employees Keen to Broaden Skills

The demand for skills training has been very high, according to Geoff Price, Union Learning Fund Project Manager. Trade Unions and VT have worked hard together to provide learning opportunities for the workforce by creating the Workplace Learning Centre.

Speaking in response to this prestigious recognition of VTS’s accomplishments in this field, Price stated he was “delighted” to have received the award after going through a rigorous judging procedure. “The Big Tick Award was great recognition of efforts that have been made,” he said.

Skills for Life

But this does not mark the end of the road for the programme, or for the cooperation between the college and VTS. Indeed, Eastleigh College and VTS are set to continue delivering Skills for Life Training in the forthcoming academic year. It is just one of a number of Eastleigh College’s collaborative partnerships to deliver training in the workplace, seeking to meet the Government’s call for Colleges to engage with employers in providing the training required by industry for the workplace.

FE News would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate not only VTS and Eastleigh College, but also the employees who have taken this opportunity to improve their skills. Without dedicated and enthusiastic participation from both sides, such achievement would not be possible.
