West Cheshire College Students Head for the Continent

A group of adult students from West Cheshire College learning German decided to put their learning to good use. They headed to the small German town of Lörrach, spending a week with students there who are learning English.

The 17 adults, aged 32-82, are all on German courses from Level 1 to Level 6. During the one week excursion they were able to get a better understanding of the language through a series of cultural and social events in the area. It wasn”t all work and no play, though; the students were also able to visit castles and caves in nearby cities.

Twinning for Winning

The trip was made possible through the Tandem Learning Programme that the college has set up. It is supported by Chester International Links Association and was developed three years ago as part of the twinning between the cities of Chester and Lörrach. It allows students to spend one week a year in each other’s countries, staying both with guest families and in hotel accommodation.

Tutor Nicola Oldfield, who accompanied the students said: “The trip was a wonderful experience for the students who had great fun getting to know their partners and using their language. This was the second German student visit to Lörrach and it was wonderful to both greet familiar faces and make new friends. The Tandem programme has led to the forging of many continuing friendships and to independent initiatives, such as the establishing of an English/German rambling club.”
