East Sussex College students nominated for prestigious Farley Arts Trust Award

Eight students from East Sussex College have been nominated for this year’s Farley Arts Trust Awards.

Each year, Art students from schools and colleges across East Sussex are invited to submit pieces of art to take part in a year-long exhibition at the Farleys Gallery in Chiddingly.

The Awards are presented in several categories including painting; sculpture, mixed media, textiles, photography, and works on paper. There are also two other awards for Art on the Move and Surrealism.

This year three Art & Design students from the Eastbourne campus and five students from the Lewes campus have been invited to the awards ceremony on Friday 18th October.

The finalists from Eastbourne are:

Izzy Patterson, who specialises in Textiles Design and fashion, created outcomes for swimwear based on micro-cultures in pond life.

Jessica Miles created a range of prints based on her relationship with synaesthesia.

Emily Coates, who now studies at Kingston University, created an advertising campaign to raise awareness for FoodBanks.

The finalists from Lewes are:

Lola Chambers is fascinated by the semi-transparent nature of jellyfish which has inspired her dress.

Gus Baldwin created a sculpture in the form of a snail to illustrate the slow, numb feelings of anxiety and vulnerability.

Katarzyna Fedor’s oil painted canvas represents the current societal situation regarding immigration and domesticity.

Shannon Townsend has created a book of sketches that visually explore the relationship between Architecture and atmosphere.

Thomas Barling-Gasson has created a typeface in response to sea pollution.

Handing out the certificates and awards at this year’s ceremony will be Sir Peter Blake, one of the country’s most well-known and worldwide critically acclaimed artists who is popularly known for the Beatles’ Sgt Pepper album cover.

Michael Shepherd, Art & Design course leader, said: “We’re delighted that six of our students have again been selected for Farley Arts Trust Awards. It is an exciting opportunity for them to receive a wider appreciation of their work in a public gallery. The students should be very proud, and I’ll be cheering them on at the awards ceremony.”

The Farley Arts Trust Awards has been running since 2006 and draws inspiration from the lives and work of Sir Roland Penrose and Lee Miller. Budding artists have their work reviewed by Antony Penrose and Ian Chance in July and the successful students are invited to awards in October. After the awards, the artwork goes on public view at the Farley Gallery for the rest of the year.
