Edinburgh Project Throws Down A Literacy and Numeracy Gauntlet

Edinburgh’s City Literacy and Numeracy (CLAN) Project has just taken in applications for its 2005-6 Challenge Fund. The fund, which is backed by the Scottish Executive, will finance innovative projects that embed literacy and numeracy teaching within vocational and other skills areas. The aim of the initiative is to successfully improve the basic literacy and numeracy skills of “hard to reach” learners.
In considering applications, CLAN will prioritise schemes that work with a number of target groups of learners who fit into the “hard to reach” category. These include people with limited initial education; unemployed people and workers facing redundancy; people for whom English is a second language; people who live in disadvantaged areas; workers in low skill jobs or low incomes; and people with health problems or disabilities.
Projects launched by last year’s challenge fund included Driving Theory Test, a scheme for 15-25 year olds which uses the theory test as a tool for literacy development. Another project, Suntrap Garden, integrates basic literacy and numeracy with horticulture for adults with learning difficulties.
