Over half of young people now go to university
AAT response to Government announcement that over half of young people now go to university
Mark Farrar, Chief Executive, AAT, said:
“Whilst university is the best option for many school leavers, it’s good to remind ourselves there are other routes which are equally credible and increasingly well viewed by employers.
“Vocational qualifications – such as AAT – can help young people get jobs and qualify a year earlier, without incurring hefty debts or damaging their long-term career prospects.”

These statistics include the higher education participation rate for students who are:
- 17 to 30 years old
- in higher education (HE) for the first time
- living in England
- in UK HE institutions and English, Welsh and Scottish further education providers
- staying in HE for at least 6 months
Statistics are available by age, sex and mode of study (full-time or part-time). Experimental breakdowns are also included for level of study and provider type. Region of domicile data will follow at a later date.
