School uniform and Cambridge admissions

Today our article outlines our position on school uniform policy as well as positive coverage about more state school pupils entering Cambridge University.

Gender neutral uniform

On Saturday, 7 September, there was widespread coverage about the Priory school in East Sussex introducing a gender neutral uniform policy, which was protested by parents of pupils. 

Our school uniform policy is clear that a school must have regard to its obligations under equalities legislation.

A Department for Education spokesperson said:

Schools are responsible for setting their own school uniform policy and any disputes should be resolved by schools in discussion with parents.

Cambridge University

Today, Monday 9 September, Cambridge University released admissions data which shows that more state school educated pupils will be starting at the university this academic year since records began.

The data shows that 68% of students starting at Cambridge are from state schools, up from 65% last year and 62% four years ago.

This is a welcome move  – the doors to our universities should be as wide open as possible so that anyone with talent and potential has the chance to benefit from our world-leading institutions.
