FE Students Receive Awards to Acknowledge Outstanding Achievement

The Lord Mayor of Bristol, Councillor Peter Abraham, hosted the inaugural Lord Mayor’s 14-19 Achievement Awards for outstanding educational achievements at his official residence, The Mansion House on Clifton Down last week.

The Awards ceremony, which are organised by the Bristol Campus – a partnership between the LEA, the Learning and Skills Council (LSC), Connexions, local schools, colleges and work-based learning providers – seeks to acknowledge the educational achievements of some of Bristol’s most outstanding young people.

The Six awards presented covered two categories: 14-16 year olds and post-16. The awards were for high achievement, achievement under difficult circumstances and achievement by a student from an ethnic minority. There was also one overall winner who received a special “Learner of the Year Award”.

Delight at Hosting of Awards

All schools, colleges and work-based learning providers in Bristol were asked to nominate students for the awards and a total of 37 nominations were received. LSC West of England Chairman, John Savage, said: “We are delighted to be hosting the first ever Lord Mayor’s Bristol Campus Achievement Awards.

“There are numerous success stories throughout Bristol,” he continued, “where young people have made excellent achievements ““ we want to raise the profile of these dedicated individuals who have made such outstanding progress. We would like to congratulate all the winners and nominees for all their hard work.”

Success Through Difficulty

The achievement under difficult circumstances award was presented to Carley Zampella from Filton College. The twenty-year-old was not expected to progress to higher education due to her disappointing GCSE results at school. Carley however is now due to attend drama school after excelling at Filton having achieved the First Diploma in Performing Arts and National Diploma in Drama. She is currently achieving high standards in her final year of the HND Performance Arts programme.

Malcolm Gillespie, LSC Regional Director ““ South West, said: “The LSC has a single goal: to improve the skills of England’s young people and adults to world class standards. These awards will not just recognise a high level of achievement, but will also celebrate the effort and commitment that these young people have shown ““ they have been able to achieve far more than was originally thought possible.”
