Wine and Spirit Awarded ESF Funding for Trade Professional Initiative

For many, the problem of deciding which wine to pick that compliments a romantic dinner for two is a matter of personal pleasure and satisfaction.

For some, however, it is not just personal; it is professional. And in a bid to improve the standards in the Wine and Spirits industry, the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) has awarded funding to the Wine and Spirit Education Trust to run a programme called The Perfect Pour. The programme is to be offered to businesses in Islington, Lambeth and the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea.

The project benefits from European Social Funding through the LSC, and is intended to allow businesses access to substantially subsidised training enhancing the service and performance of staff in clubs, pubs, restaurants and bars. The Wine & Spirit Education Trust has been in operation for more than thirty years and is the only such body approved by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA). It is specifically targeted at small and medium sized businesses (those with up to 250 employees), but larger organisations could still be eligible.

At a free lunch and workshop, attendees will be treated to a presentation on how to match wines to food, the impact of training on business performance and how to access the full range of Wine & Spirit Education Trust’s subsidised courses. This free lunch session will be held later today.

A Foretaste of the Benefits

Amongst the benefits that the course can offer businesses are enhancing the professionalism of the staff and thereby improving the public image of the company; building on the knowledge of the staff to build up the sales of drinks through increased customer respect, thus leading to an increased turnover; and the logical corollary of increasing repeat business through customer satisfaction and a better reputation.

It is hoped that this will provide a tasty morsel for those engaged in the industry, giving them an idea as to the benefits for their business in further enhancing the skills of their workforce through funded training courses.
