Rotherham College Catering and Hospitality students serve up a treat at official opening

Rotherham College Catering and Hospitality students had the opportunity to prepare and serve lunch for HRH The Duke of York KG during his visit to University Centre Rotherham.

His Royal Highness visited the new £10.5 million Higher Education facility on Doncaster Gate to mark the official opening on Monday 24th June 2019. The Duke was invited on a tour of the impressive building and was introduced to students benefitting from a University Centre dedicated to providing degrees on their doorstep.

Dozens of guests were in attendance at the official opening, allowing Catering and Hospitality students to prepare and serve a wide-range of canapés and refreshments to key figures from the local community including businesspeople and the media.

Following The Duke’s tour and plaque unveiling, His Royal Highness attended a private business lunch with several key dignitaries from South Yorkshire. Catering and Hospitality students from Rotherham College were given the responsibility of preparing food and refreshments as well as setting the table and serving dignitaries.

Jack Crane, studying towards a Level 1 Diploma in Professional Cookery, said

“It was a privilege to work at such a special event, and it was especially an honour to serve His Royal Highness personally and even make one of the dishes for him.”

John Deehan, Restaurant Manager of The Wharncliffe, Rotherham College’s training restaurant, added

“I’m proud to see the hard work that our learners put in to making this such a special event for the opening of the UCR. It’s certainly a day that some of our students will never forget, especially now that they can add providing hospitality to a member of the Royal Family to their experience here at College.”
