Lecturer’s Innovation Award Given at Royal Lancaster Hotel

A lecturer at Eastleigh College, Hampshire, has received a prestigious award from City & Guilds at their annual vocational UK Awards Ceremony held at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in London.

Graham Medley, the college’s engineering lecturer, was at the event to receive his “Medal of Excellence” for his outstanding work as a lecturer and trainer. But there was an extra surprise for Mr Medley, when he was given a surprise award for innovative work in the engineering sector, one of only eight national awards.

The lecturer, much respected for his community work and passion for engineering, was delighted with the honour. “I was really shocked at receiving this award, it was a total surprise,” he said. “I am overwhelmed, but very pleased at the recognition of my work at the college and with the local community. I get real pleasure from offering my students a variety of tasks that catch their imagination, giving them a purpose that motivates them to a final outcome.”

A Broad Spectrum of Achievement

Just some of Mr Medley’s achievements have included creating a silver rolling machine for jewellery students at the college, a millennium weather vane for the North Baddesley Community Centre, a modified wheelchair allowing a photographer to be able to use her camera, a can crusher for disabled people at Eastleigh’s Hexagon Centre, a water heater for a local Girl Guide camp, to name but a few.

Stephen Shaw, Head of 14-18 Provision at Eastleigh College, praised the engineering lecturer, saying: “Many of the projects that Graham is approached with are complex tasks which need a high level of skills knowledge. Engineering is very much a traditional course at Eastleigh College, yet Graham is very innovative in his thinking for solutions to the projects he is faced with. There is a raised level of learning for students in the area of Engineering at Eastleigh College, which is demonstrated by the increased provision in the area with sound progression into higher levels of learning and employment.”
