Education Development International Tackle New Role

A new organisation assumed the role of running the journalism qualification that sets the standard across the industry.

Education Development International (EDI) will take over responsibility for running the Level 4 NVQ in Newspaper Journalism starting in September. The NVQ is the equivalent of a pass in a British University degree, and can be combined either with an in ““ house scheme or a company’s own diploma award.

There are four separate NVQs within Newspaper Journalism. These include writing; production (or sub ““ editing); press photography; and graphic journalism. The course also covers the use of shorthand. There is a requirement that all of those taking the course be familiar with newspaper law, ethical conduct and public affairs, and all must also have evidence of previous work, published articles or photography.

Education Development International (EDI) are one of the leading global awarding bodies and is currently the third largest awarding body for vocational qualifications in the UK, with roughly 800 centres delivering almost 100,000 qualifications each year. EDI also works closely with the National Curriculum, providing a comprehensive range of tests that are taken in some 1,000 schools nation ““ wide by more than half a million individuals.

Kieth Parker, the Chairman of the Newspaper Qualifications Council who is also the Managing Director for both the Express and Star newspapers, had this statement to make on the venture: “This exciting opportunity again demonstrates the initiatives being undertaken to support and develop training and personal development for employers and employees within the newspaper industry.”
