From education to employment

Degree apprenticeship opens doors for Clarendon Sixth Form College student Joseph

An A level student at Clarendon Sixth Form College is preparing to start a successful career after securing a degree apprenticeship with Watson Homes.

Joseph Kay, a former Saddleworth School student, has been accepted onto a prestigious quantity surveyor apprenticeship with the company, in partnership with Salford University.

Joseph is the first degree apprentice Watson Homes have employed and was selected for the role from 100 other applicants. He will start in the role in July, upon completion of his studies in maths, further maths and physics.

Quantity surveyors are highly sought after in the construction in the industry and usually train at university, before starting a career. The degree apprenticeship offers an alternative work based route to training.

Joseph, said: “I’m really pleased to be taken on by Watson Homes as their first degree apprentice and can’t wait to start working there. I was considering going to university after leaving college but I decided that this would be a better option as I will still come out with a degree and be earning money whilst doing it. The company has made me feel very welcome already and I hope that this is the start of something good for me.”

Joseph will now work with Watson Homes to manage material use, prepare cost reports and allocate subcontractors whilst completing his apprenticeship.
