Students Continue to Excel in their Chosen Sports

It has been a successful year for our sports students at Brecon Beacons College, who are continuing to succeed in a number of competitions.

Iwan Evans from Builth continues to impress in cycling for Team Wales, as he finished 3rd in his under 18 category at the Betty Pharaoh Memorial Road Race, and 25th overall in an 80 strong elite racing line up.

Pro continental teams such as Madison Genesis, Team Ribble Pro Cycling, Canyon DHB P/B Bloor Homes and Iwan’s Team Wales u23 Racing Academy formed the line up at the race.

The race provided invaluable experience for Iwan, who was at the younger scale of riders which ranged from u18 to 30.

This is the young cyclist’s first year racing in age category events, having taken part in European and international competitions in between training in Newport.

Iwan first got into the sport aged eight, with his father being a motorbike enthusiast. After an injury his dad took up cycling and Iwan enjoyed it so much by 14 he started to train seriously.

He hasn’t looked back since, and following his successful career so far he hopes to become semi-professional once he finishes his course with us at Brecon Beacons College.

Iwan is also aiming to break into the Welsh u23’s team or earn a place at a pro continental team, as well as moving onto university.

Evan Price Davies from Three Cocks has also enjoyed some recent sporting success, after coming 4th in the Red Kite Challenge at Devil’s Bridge. The keen runner also took under 20 gold in the Welsh Championships, after taking to the sport just over a year ago. He will next be heading to Snowdonia this summer, as he takes on the welsh trials of 5k and 10 mile runs.

Iwan Lavis from Llanfihangel Tal-y-llyn has been taking to the water with his kayaking recently and has been competing well since taking up the sport, and also represented the colleges in squash at the British Colleges tournament in Nottingham.

Clarisse Ann Lamsen from Builth was also at the tournament, as she excelled on the badminton court. She followed her previous success of winning all seven of her matches in 2017 and representing Wales in the 2018 National Championships.

They are all on course to excel in their studies as well, and we wish them the best of luck as they approach the end of their courses with us!
