Elite wood cutters descend on Coleg Cambria Llysfasi for top UK logging competition
ELITE woodsmen showed they are a cut above at a national logging contest.
Hosted by Coleg Cambria Llysfasi, the UK Loggers (UKL) Competition and training day was a huge success, welcoming 11 participants in a series of challenges.
Overall winner was Mark Edwards, who compiled the highest score in a multitude of categories including tree felling, combined cuts, limbing, fitting a new chain and precision cuts.
Sponsored by Tilhill Forestry, Euroforest Ltd, Husqvarna, Aspen, mwmac Ltd and Ruthin’s Clifford Jones Timber, UKL spokesman Richard Siddons said it was a fantastic occasion.
“Well done to Mark Edwards for an excellent performance, and thanks to all the judges, helpers and competitors for making it a great competition on a lovely Spring day,” said Richard.
“Also, a big thank you to our sponsors for supporting competition logging as without them we could not run these events.”
Andy White, lead Forestry lecturer at Llysfasi, added: “It was great for us to host this competition and a brilliant opportunity for aspiring chainsaw and forestry students to learn from national champions here on the day.
“The skills demonstrated by the competitors at all level were incredible and we wish all the best of luck going forward to the UK World Logging Championship.”
Richard said the event at Coleg Cambria Llysfasi is one of a series and will have played a part in attracting more people to the industry.
“The competition drives up standard, ensuring a strong competitive environment in the UK,” he added.
