Barnsley College Media students nominated for Young ARIAs
Barnsley College Creative Media Production students Matty Hugill, Kyle Walker and Karl Wellbelove have been nominated for a Young Audio and Radio Industry Award (Young ARIAs) for their show on online radio station The Vibe.
The three students run their own radio show, Everything Football, outside of their studies, with the weekly show dissecting the upcoming football fixtures, delving deep into the latest rumours and debates and discussing hard hitting topics in the world of football. Lee Barber, Barnsley College Media Teacher and Station Manager for The Vibe, suggested that the students enter the Young ARIAs, Best in Sport category for the work they have done on the show.
Lee said: “Kyle, Karl and Matty have shown themselves to be extremely passionate about sports journalism, and often that passion can lead to amazing audio content. At first it wasn’t about winning, it was simply about having the experience of creating a demo and applying for a major competition. Although I think this may have changed now and they have their eye on the prize!”
Kyle, aged 17, added: “We like to do hard hitting topics on the show that don’t generally get as much coverage, such as sexism or racism in football. We do this to make sure our show is different and stands out, in this industry that’s what you have to do. We’re hoping that this may help us in the awards.
“The Vibe was launched just a few weeks ago, it’s a great radio station and opportunity for us and the facilities we have access to at such a young age are just incredible to work with. You can listen via the website, on Smart speaker, or via the TuneIn app and you can find The Vibe Barnsley and Everything Football on Twitter.”
The students will find out whether they have won the award at the awards ceremony held in London at the BBC Radio Theatre on 17 May.
