Starter, main, and dissection – students given insight into live anatomy dissection after dinner.

A group of Sports students from East Sussex College Hastings recently enjoyed a two-course meal with a twist, courtesy of Anatomy Lab Live.

Sports Massage Therapy, Personal Training, and Sport students travelled to the Hilton Hotel in Brighton on Saturday 9th March for the world’s only live and interactive anatomical dinner and dissection experience, hosted by Anatomy Lab Live.

After appearing on BBC’s Dragons’ Den, the organisers are touring the UK with their unique anatomical learning experience.

The surgery gave the students the chance to enjoy a two-course meal and, moments later, experience a complete surgical procedure with real anatomical specimens. The eye-opening experience gave the students an insight into the science behind intricate structures found within internal organs.

Vicki McFarlane, Sports Massage Therapy tutor at East Sussex College, said: “The students absolutely loved this trip. It was a very interesting and very unusual experience; to have dinner, followed by a live dissection wasn’t something any of our students had done before.

“It was extremely worthwhile and an excellent opportunity for the students to further develop knowledge and understanding of all body systems. They also had the chance to learn about how the emergency services deal with road traffic accidents, hospital investigations, and operations to preserve life.”

Lucy Apps, Sports Massage Therapy student, said: “It was such an in-depth experience with so much interaction. Following through an industry-based scenario from start to finish was very interesting to undertake and I took so much away from it.”
