From education to employment

Duty calls for BCoT students

Students from Basingstoke College of Technology (BCoT) recently had the chance to suit up and solve a mock crime scene within the college, as part of their Level 3 Extended Diploma in Public Services.

Guided by Public Services lecturer Martha Allbutt, who was previously a Detective Inspector for Merseyside Police, the students had to uncover the cause of an unexplained death, using information and evidence they received throughout the day.

The students then had to work in groups to develop a working hypothesis to submit a final report for a Detective Superintendent. The activity is similar to the training that trainee detectives in the police force receive on their Initial Crime Investigators Development Programme (ICDIP).

Anthony Bravo, Principal of BCoT, said: “The mock crime scene is always greatly anticipated by our students at the beginning of the year, as it gives them the chance to gain new skills and experience hands on. Having the opportunity to learn from lecturers, who are experts in their chosen industry ensures our students leave BCoT prepared for a career in their industry.”

BCoT’s Uniformed Public Services courses prepare students for a career in the emergency services or armed forces, with students getting the chance to undertake work experience with Hampshire Police, the Ministry of Defence and Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service.
