From education to employment

First marketing apprenticeships given government backing

Maggie Jones, Director of Qualifications and Partnerships at CIM

The Chartered Institute of Marketing has today (7 Mar) confirmed that two new government-backed apprenticeships have been approved and are available immediately. Online retailer AO is among the first organisations to train marketing apprentices.

The apprenticeships, that will benefit from apprenticeship levy funding, include a Level 6 Marketing Manager programme and a Level 4 Marketing Executive programme. They have been approved by the Institute for Apprenticeships, the body tasked by government with ensuring the development of high quality apprenticeships.

The Registered Apprenticeship Training Providers (RoATP) working with Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) already has two groups booked to start their training under the newly funded schemes.

The new marketing apprenticeships were designed by an industry trailblazer group, headed by CIM and including representatives from Mercedes Financial Services, Seetec, Clarks and BT.

The group has produced a set of standards candidates have to meet to complete the apprenticeship, along with an End Point Assessment plan for how the apprenticeships will be assessed.

Recent research by CIM suggests that apprenticeships will be an increasingly popular route into the industry. Among the 500 17-19 year olds surveyed, the majority (72%) do not think a degree in marketing is necessary. Instead, 21% would look for a trainee marketing job and 20% for a marketing apprenticeship.

Maggie Jones, Director of Qualifications and Partnerships at CIM said:

“We have long believed in the importance of professional training for marketers. Apprenticeships create a clear and credible non-academic route to joining the marketing profession. Investment in them will help improve access to our industry and, in turn, nurture diverse talent within it. Marketing is an exciting and rewarding career and it is fantastic news that we’re able to open it up to more people thanks to this funding.”

The first apprentices will complete their training within 2020, by when CIM hopes to be to an end point assessor (EPAO).
