Borders College commits to Armed Forces Covenant

Borders College recently demonstrated its commitment and support to the Armed Forces community by signing the Armed Forces Covenant.

Principal Angela Cox, Access to Uniform Services students and Lecturer Damien Asquith (ex-services personnel), together with Head of HR Debbie Kerr and Head of Student Services Clare Nairn, all teamed up to sign the agreement.

The signing of the Covenant shows that the College recognises the value serving personnel, reservists, veterans and military families bring to the College. By becoming a forces-friendly employer, the College can also benefit from the wide range of unique skills and experiences that reservists and veterans can bring to the organisation.

The College aims to uphold the principles of the Armed Forces Covenant by:

• Promoting the fact that we are an armed forces-friendly organisation
• Seeking to support the employment of veterans young and old and working with the Career Transition Partnership (CTP), in order to establish a tailored employment and/or training pathway for service leavers
• Striving to support the employment and/or training of service spouses and partners
• Endeavouring to offer a degree of flexibility in granting leave for service spouses and partners before, during and after a partner’s deployment
• Seeking to support our employees who choose to be members of the Reserve Forces, including accommodating their training and deployment where possible
• Offering support to our local cadet units, either in our local community or in local schools, where possible
• Aiming to actively participate in Armed Forces Day
