*Good Luck* to SERC students as they prepare for the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition #BTYSTE

The New Year is getting off to a high-profile start for South Eastern Regional College’s (SERC) applied science students as they prepare for the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition.

Now in its 55th year, the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition offers a substantial prize fund and trophy, as well as over 140 prizes for individuals, groups, and teachers. Beginning on Wednesday 9 January at the RDS Arena in Dublin, the event will attract the brightest young minds for the ultimate showcase of second level science and technology.

The BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition is one of the largest and longest running STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) events in the world, allowing students the space to explore STEM subjects and demonstrate creativity by creating a project of their choice that can help them to turn an idea into reality.

SERC will be represented by students from the Bangor, Downpatrick and Lisburn campuses: 18-year-old Jordan Stafford, 17-year-old Alex Boyd,18-year-old Oliver Kelsey,18-year-old Olivia McConkey,18-year-old Kerri-Melissa Burns,17-year-old Sarah Scannell, 18-year-old Jude Young and 19-year-old Yasmin Jhan.

The 8 students are among the 47 selected from Northern Ireland whose projects where shortlisted to be showcased at the Exhibition and are entered in one of four categories — biological and ecological sciences; chemical, physical and mathematical sciences; social and behavioural sciences; and technology.

SERC Head of School for the School of Applied Science, Sport and Access to Education Collette Carson said:

“From everyone at SERC we wish all the students the very best of luck. The event is an excellent opportunity to highlight our talented youth on the international stage and I have no doubt that the students will be a credit to themselves, their families and the college.”
