City of Glasgow College Gold Medal Student Lands Top Restaurant Job

A Gold medal winning City of Glasgow College student is celebrating after landing a job at a top Glasgow restaurant.

21-year-old Ance Kristone, originally from Latvia, recently took home a gold medal from the UK largest skills competition, WorldSkillsUK Live as part of the team from Scotland’s Super College.

The talented Professional Cookery student is set to join the team at Cali Bruich as a pastry chef. She has also spent three years working at Ubiquitous Chip in the city during her studies.

Commenting, Ance said, “Before WorldSkillsUK I had never competed before so it felt like an amazing opportunity that I didn’t want to miss; especially as this is my last year in college so I wanted to make the most of it.

“My main reason behind competing was to gain confidence in myself and also to learn new skills and techniques in patisserie – I believe that I have achieved this.

“I now feel ready for a new challenge and a new opportunity to put mu skills into practice alongside the team at Cali Bruich.”

Paul Little, Principal and Chief Executive of City of Glasgow College, and Lead Ambassador for WorldSkills in Scotland said:

“This is our best medal tally yet a truly remarkable achievement. I am delighted that the incredible hard work of our students and lecturers has paid off.

“To be at the top of the WorldSkills league table yet again shows just how well we are doing in preparing our students to be the best in their chosen career.

“WorldSkills UK LIVE is the UK’s largest skills and careers event helping shape the future of a new generation. As an advocate for tertiary excellence, I firmly believe these competitions help to improve skills levels and deliver economic growth.”

The students competed in core disciplines which this year included digital video production, fine jewellery making, media makeup: body, fashion and photographic makeup, and customer care.

Medals were awarded in 70 different skills in total. Over 500 top apprentices and learners from 115 colleges and training providers across the UK competed at the elite skills competition which took place from 15 to 17 November at Birmingham’s NEC.
