From education to employment

New College Durham Framwellgate Moor Campus STEM Centre gets go ahead

Planning permission has been granted by Durham County Council for the next phase of development on the New College Durham Framwellgate Moor Campus.

This will see the construction of new facilities for Science, Technology, Engineering and Manufacturing allowing the College to plan and deliver courses with employers to meet the higher skill needs of the region in these vital industries. The project will cost around £8m and will be ready to operate from September 2019.

Welcoming the decision, New College Durham Principal John Widdowson said:

“As employers of all sizes in the region look to equip themselves for the more digitised and technology based economy of the future, securing a highly skilled and qualified workforce will be a major priority. This new facility will help the region rise to that challenge. As well as providing cutting edge equipment to train both the current and future workforce, we hope the STEM Centre at Framwellgate Moor will form part of a regional partnership of employers, colleges and other educational providers to create an Institute of Technology for the North East. This will be one of only a small number of Institutes to be created nationally and will be the only one in the region.”
