Aspiring engineer earns award for outstanding placement

An engineering student has received a prestigious award in recognition of his outstanding performance during a work placement.

MEng Civil Engineering student Michael Wilcox has been awarded the University of Plymouth Industrial Placement Award by the Civil Engineering Contractors Association (CECA).

Michael, who lives in Plymouth, received the accolade for his achievements while working with engineering services firm Dyer & Butler at their office in Exeter.

In particular, he was recognised for his achievements on a range of projects including the A39 Rondswell Cycle Bridge in north Devon, construction of the Tithebarn Lane Cycle Bridge across the M5, and the Brixham Road Widening Phase 3 project.

Michael, who is now back at the University completing his studies, said:

“I learnt so much from my year’s placement, particularly in surveying management, quantity surveying and procurement. They are all skills that I will be able to use throughout my career.”

The CECA South West Training Awards are presented annually to trainee civil engineers, apprentices and lifetime achievers in recognition of exceptional performance and dedication.

Paul Santer, CECA South West Regional Director, said that the success of Michael and the other winners highlighted the opportunities opening up for young people in civil engineering. He added:

“Skills shortages are one of the biggest challenges facing our industry, so we are working hard to encourage young people, particularly women, from diverse backgrounds to consider careers in civil engineering.

“Our award winners have made fantastic starts to their working lives and I hope will inspire others of their generation to find out more about the wide range of professional and vocational careers on offer. Many of our previous winners are today working on some of the most important infrastructure projects in the UK, which is a reflection of both their skills and commitment and the extensive employer support provided for training and development.”

In recognition of his success, Michael was presented with a trophy and a cheque for £500 during an awards ceremony held at The Grand Hotel in Torquay.
