Public services students call in the troops
Soldiers from the British Army’s Irish Guards Regiment visited public services students at Tameside College to talk about life in the armed forces.
Colour Sgt Pintar, Sgt Moloney and Sgt Naylor delivered a presentation, Q&A session and equipment demonstration.
Colour Sgt Pintar talked about his time with the regiment and the different activities involved such as: kayaking, adventure sports, world travel and combat exercises.
Sgt Moloney and Sgt Naylor also demonstrated some of the equipment used by infantry soldiers and took questions on the required eligibility tests.
The Irish Guards Regiment was formed in 1900 by Queen Victoria to commemorate the Irish soldiers who fought in the Boer war. The regiment has served all around the world and fought during both world wars. Alongside combat tours, the regiment serves as one of the units guarding the Queen at Buckingham Palace.
Kathryn McDonald, public services teacher at Tameside College, said: “We regularly organise visits and trips involving the armed forces as many of our students are interested in joining in the future. It’s really good for the students to see exactly what they can expect from this type of career and to know what they need to do to get there.”
