Design students help The Kilt Shop visualise rebrand

Six students on the HND Graphic Design (Visual Communications) programme at Borders College were recently tasked with a client design brief to create a new identity for the company branding and logo of The Kilt Shop, Galashiels. The group set to work creating their own unique takes on a reimagined look for the brand, presenting their creations to shop owner Mike Lindsay for him to select the preferred design for implementation.

Mike felt that student Michael Louth’s design was the most appropriate for The Kilt Shop’s market, saying:
“I was particularly impressed with the variety of ideas shown to me and the fact there were no duplicates really expressed the students’ individual styles and thoughts.
“In the end I chose the one that I felt best captured the ethos of The Kilt Shop with colours that fit in well with the business.”

Describing the concept behind the logo, Michael says:
“The logo consists of 3 letters: T, K and S – the 3 main letters of the shop.  In this case, the letters were arranged to take the form of a thistle.”
Michael has already seen one of his logos brought to life when East Lothian charity, Friends of Ormiston Park, adopted his design for their logo last year, and was delighted to have his design for The Kilt Shop chosen in this recent project.

Visual Communications Lecturer, Tracey Scott, comments:
“The class all worked really well on this: the most important aspect of a live brief is meeting the deadline – something that’s essential in industry but can get a little ‘loose’ in a college environment.  For this project each student worked right up to the eleventh hour and ensured they all delivered a professional presentation to the client.”

Mike adds that the students are a credit to Borders College, commenting that it was not an easy decision to select the overall winning design as each entry was not only well presented but displayed an awareness of what was required.
