Performing arts students celebrate ‘the Bard’s’ birthday

Performing arts students at Clarendon Sixth Form College celebrated the birthday of William Shakespeare on 23^rd April.

The students explored the Bard’s writing as well as the impact his work has had on modern culture through workshops and activities.

Students engaged in workshops focusing on stylistics and developing analytical skills, explored Iambic pentameter, developed performance skills by working through scenes and monologues from Shakespeare’s plays, sang madrigals, worked through dances from the Elizabethan era as well as more modern versions inspired by Romeo and Juliet from West Side story. Students also re-contextualised a version of Macbeth and finished the day with a performance to celebrate all their learning and, of course, the man himself.

Musical theatre students treated the staff to a surprise rendition of happy birthday.

Zara Roxburgh, performing arts student at Clarendon Sixth Form College, said: “Thank you to you and all the teachers for organising the Shakespeare day. I really enjoyed the singing workshop with Oleksandra and it was interesting to see how Shakespeare influenced my passion for musical theatre.”
