Beverley Harrison, Director of Further Education at the Department for the Economy, with SERC principal and chief executive Ken Webb

On Thursday 12 April, Beverley Harrison, Director of Further Education at the Department for the Economy, visited South Eastern Regional College (SERC) newly opened Professional Skills Centre located on the Dundrod Road, Nutts Corner where she met employers, tutors, apprentices and engineers who are studying at the facility. The Centre provides a variety of compliance training and assessment packages.

On arrival, Beverley was greeted by SERC principal and chief executive Ken Webb and was given a presentation about the wide range of accredited courses that are on offer to help upskill and accredited engineers working within the industry. Beverley then got a guided tour of the dedicated training facility which specialises in areas such as gas, electrical, fire and security, health and safety, plumbing and engineering.

During the tour, Beverley took the time to speak individually to all the people she met finding out about why each chose their course or apprenticeship and their aspirations for the future and how employers are benefitting from the training on offer.

Ken Webb, Principal and Chief Executive of SERC, said:

It was a pleasure to welcome Beverley to SERC to meet apprentices, employers and tutors at our new facility. Everyone very much enjoyed telling her all about their experiences and aspirations during the tour. She was very positive about our college and the opportunities we have available to help support industry. I am delighted that Beverley got to see first-hand the brand new facility and personally speak to employers, apprentices and engineers who are directly benefitting from the training on offer. It reinforces our reputation as a dedicated training venue for local businesses, pioneering skills development in Northern Ireland and beyond.

“With the lack of a skilled workforce a barrier to economic growth in Northern Ireland – the scale of the challenge to upskill and accredit the construction workforce cannot be under-estimated. The new facility allow us to ensure that our curriculum reflects the current needs of industry and prepares businesses for the developments and environmental challenges which face us all.”
