Food students master tricks of the trade
Students from Tameside College’s food and hospitality department enjoyed a day of masterclasses with some of Manchester’s best restauranteurs and front of house staff.
Level three food and beverage supervision students took time out of their college timetables to visit Pot Kettle Black Coffee along with The French, Mr Coopers and Wood restaurants.
The masterclasses, organised by food and hospitality teacher, John Holden, were designed to demonstrate the variety and quality of restaurants in the area to students and to hone their skills with help from some of Manchester’s highly skilled hospitality employees.
The students learnt a variety of skills including: coffee making, how to pair wine with food, cocktail making and presenting a fine dining experience.
John, said: “These masterclasses have helped the students to gain experience and skills that they just can’t get in a classroom. All the venues that we visited were more than happy to share their knowledge with us and the students can be proud that they represented the college excellently. To visit an exclusive restaurant and learn from their very best is absolutely a first class experience for the students.”
Sophie Reilly, a former Longdendale High School and food and beverage supervision student at Tameside College, said: “I enjoyed the masterclasses a lot. All the staff that we worked with were really helpful and gave us lots of great tips of the trade. They’ve got so much to teach you and I would love to work in a restaurant like one of those we visited.”
