London South East Colleges’ Apprentice shortlisted for national award

An apprentice administrator at London South East Colleges’ Bexley campus has been shortlisted in the prestigious Asian Apprenticeship Awards 2017.

Mohammed Hamid (20) from Charlton started his apprenticeship at the college in November 2016 and is working towards a Level 3 qualification in Business Administration. He was nominated for the Finance, Legal and Professional Services Award by his tutor and was told this week that he has been successfully shortlisted.

Mohammed will be attending a gala dinner on 2 November at Edgbaston Cricket Ground at which winners will be announced and presented with awards. The event recognises and celebrates the talent and diversity within the BME Asian community together with supportive employers and learning providers.

Director of London South East Apprenticeship Company, Ashley McCaul praised Mohammed’s hard work, saying:

“We are absolutely delighted that Mohammed has been shortlisted for this award.

“He is a very quick learner and has always been punctual, polite and courteous. He has the confidence to liaise at all levels and works effectively with management, staff, employers, trainees and customers – but is never afraid to find out things he doesn’t know.

“Mohammed works well on his own initiative, not always requiring instruction and supervision and has been so much more than ‘just the apprentice’. He has become an integral part of the team at the Skills Centre, gained the respect of all and will be difficult to replace when his placement concludes.

“He will be an asset to any future employer, clearly has an aptitude for business administration and thoroughly deserves to be shortlisted for this award.”

 Commenting on his success, Mohammed says:

“I am so surprised to be shortlisted for this award as I would never have thought that something like this could happen to me. My family are even more excited!

“I chose to do an apprenticeship as an alternative to going to university, because tuition fees completely put me off. I didn’t want to get into debt and being able to work while gaining a qualification really appealed to me.

“For me, doing an apprenticeship is the best decision I’ve ever made as it is really kick starting my career. I am learning so much and understanding how a work place operates, which will be real benefit when I move on. My aim is to go into the Civil Service.”
