Pioneering drill music producer gives careers talk to West London college with Speakers for Schools
Students at Hewens College in Uxbridge benefitted from an exclusive talk with pioneering UK music producer, Fumez the Engineer, on Wednesday 16th March 2022.
Organised by Speakers for Schools, the social mobility charity aimed at ending educational inequality, the in-person talk with Fumez was held with over 80 students in Years 10 and 11.
Fumez is one of the leading producers of UK rap and drill music. Born and bred in West London, he has produced his own projects such as The Mixtape 1 and The Mixtape 2, while working alongside some of the UK’s biggest artists, including Skepta, Headie One and Ms Banks.
Throughout the talk, Fumez shared his insights on how he got into the competitive music business, what goes into making a song and how to work collaboratively on creative projects.
Students were keen to ask questions to Fumez the Engineer which included:
- What advice would you give to your younger self?
- What was the biggest catalyst for your career?
- How did the environment you grew up in affect how you are today?
Fumez is one of 1,500 speakers in the charity’s network who give their time and expertise to inspire and broaden the horizons of the next generation, from FTSE-100 CEOs, politicians, academics and celebrities.
The pandemic has severely impacted access to inspirational leaders and work experience across all sectors for young people, but particularly the creative industries. Speakers for Schools is therefore engaging with a broad spectrum of influential figures to speak to state schools all over the UK, hoping to support 1million young people annually by next year.
Fumez the Engineer said:
“I came up working with the youth. It was working with the local councils and community that is a big part of who I am today. It means a lot for me to have the opportunity to speak and give back to the youth. I hope to motivate and inspire them to never limit themselves. Anything and everything is possible.”
Jason Elsom, Chief Executive Officer, Speakers for Schools, commented:
“We are delighted to see fantastic speakers such as Fumez the Engineer on board with Speakers for Schools and joining our mission to end educational inequality. Inspirational talks such as this represent an important tool for the next generation as they make important decisions about their future and ensure that there is a pipeline of inspired musicians, engineers and producers ready to step out into the working world.”
Andrew Sheehan, Assistant Prinicpal at Hewens College said:
“From the moment I let the students know that Fumez was coming to our school to give a motivational talk there was a real buzz of excitement. It gave them a huge lift to think that he would take the time to come and share his story with them. I hope that his positive messages will inspire our students to keep working on developing their own resilience and positive mindsets.”
