Meet the apprentice: Alysha from Pandrol
Global rail infrastructure specialist Pandrol are putting their apprentices in the spotlight as they aim to recognise the role of apprentices and their important work. Read on to find out about apprentice Alysha’s story…
How long have you worked for Pandrol and where are you based?
I’ve been working at Intercast and Forge in Australia for about eight weeks now.
What does your role involve?
I am an apprentice with the maintenance team as a fitter and turner.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
One of the things that I enjoy the most is learning loads for new things and working on machines that I never knew existed until I started working here.
Has anything surprised you?
The main thing that surprised me is the amount of work that comes through, and that it can vary from small jobs that only take 20 minutes to much larger ones that can take up to six hours
What have you learnt since working with Pandrol?
One of the things that I’ve learnt would have to be that when you are taking something apart to make sure you know how it goes back together, otherwise you’ll be there for a long time trying to remember how it was supposed to look.
What do you like most about working for Pandrol?
One of the things I like the most about working here is that I feel like I’m learning a lot and I haven’t been here that long, everyone here has something to give, and I can learn a lot from everyone in the team.
What are your future aspirations/plans?
In the future I want to go to university to get a degree in engineering after I have completed my apprenticeship. I want to become a marine engineer, to design submarines, ships and boats
What do you like to do outside work?
Outside of work I go to school, go to army cadets on Friday nights and spend my free time playing games with my friends.
