Public Services students at Cardiff and Vale College hone their outdoor skills on Brecon Beacons expedition

Level 2 Public Services students from Cardiff and Vale College have been on a 48-hour expedition to the Brecon Beacons.

As part of their course, the learners have been honing their outdoor skills such as camp-craft, navigation, fitness, teamwork and leadership. They have been doing this through lectures, activities and other learning experiences and the trip to the Brecon Beacons gave them the chance to practise their new skills.

“The students were exposed to the unforgiving elements, enduring bitter winds and horizontal snow flurries,” CAVC Public Services Lecturer Tom Jones said. “Every student stuck to their assigned roles and executed them with professionalism and determination that encapsulate the uniformed public services’ core values of respect, integrity, service and excellence.”

The students were also faced with an employability skills task – the “Tie a Tie Challenge”. They had to teach each other how to tie a Windsor knot properly then take photographs throughout the expedition of them wearing said tie when safe to do so. “Although a bit of fun, it helped the students develop skills such as digital literacy, teamwork and communication,” Tom explained.
